View Full Version : Mixed emotions

I look at the Nano2 with mixed emotions. It was touted as an ethernet built-in box but when I see the pictures, there is only an RS232 and a dongle. It is not as advertised. If it were, then there would be an RJ45 jack on the back and no dongle. In this I am disappointed.

Conaxsat has very good reputation for making great equipment with equally great support. I think maybe this is their way to provide an excellent product at a reasonable price point. The RS232 w/ dongle will do just fine for IKS as the throughput for IKS is very small. I do not see how they can stuff the high bandwidth required for ethernet based video through an RS232 port. That just plain does not work. Dongle to USB would be the only way to get the throughput required for video xfer over ethernet.

They do have excellent price point at this time. They are only $10 more than NF Solaris but offer USB based PVR that Solaris does not. That alone would sell me on this receiver over NF.

Support? Well folks, hold on to your shorts. This transition has been rough on everybody. That is why I am making no purchases until this all shakes out and I am encouraging other to take my wait-and-see attitude. That being said, this box remains at the top of my perspective purchases when things settle down. Who knows what FTA will be like in a month or two? Why spend your hard earned cash until you know?

Its what they call an adaptor per say... its not a dongle from what I am told...may I be stood corrected...

it isnt a dongle, the dongle is built in, that is a serial to ethernet adapter

How are they somehow using the serial connector for 2 such disparate purposes? Are they electronically switching the connector?

Does the adapter/dongle contain ethernet electronics? If it does, that would still make it a dongle of sorts.

I am trying to maintain an open mind but I am at a loss as to how this is being done. I guess if they are making double use out of the RS232 connector I would certainly have to say I was wrong and give them credit for being some very crafty fellows. Certainly never seen that done anywhere else before and I am an electrical engineer. There is a 1" rule generally used for ethernet wires. You do not ever untwist more than 1" of the twisted pair or you loose signal integrity and pick up noise. In fact when you do this work a lot you tend to untwist less than 1/4" at best. So you can see why I am questioning this.

This is just for Nano2 disscussions, the ILNIK will only work with the Nano2...
