The USB-Serial cable you bought should be ok. Do you have a driver CD for it?
You also need a Null Modem cable to use with that USB-Serial cable. (Both together)
Should work

Centauri is correct,
also the usb-serial HAS TO BE USED in conjunction with the null cable,
you CAN'T use just the usb adapter, won't work, so when you get the adapter REMEMBER to put the "null" on it before you try programming your stb :),....

Ok try this.
Plug your USB-Serial into a USB slot. Don't plug the other end to the receiver.
Now try this:
1) Go to Control Panel
2) Double click on System
3) Click on the [HARDWARE] tab then [DEVISE MANAGER]
4) Hit the [+] sign on {Ports(Com&LPT)}
5) Double click on your USB-Serial comm if its there
6) Hit the [PORT SETTINGS] Tab and click on [ADVANCED]
7) Change your com port setting and hit [OK]
Now try loading a file and Let me know

Before you tried my suggestion above, did you Plug your USB-Serial into a USB slot??
Once that USB-Serial adapter is disconnected from the computer, it disappears from the device manager as well.
I'm trying to understand your last post.
Did you install a driver or NoT?
You need a driver

change port setting to 4,hit start nothing.this im all doing on desktop windows xp.

Try going back to the devise manager and select a different com port.
Its possible com 4 is in use. :noclue:
Reboot the PC and try again

Down below is a copy/paste someone wrote up about this that helped him. Perhaps you can try his method:

i have had no trouble with the coolsat4000 or 5000.once all hardware installed, which i found went easily with unit connect to usb port via sreial it was recognized quicker by software being slipped in after all connection made.
if i use a different usb port I click on outdetect on loader,it finds where i am connected, then browse and load file...
this has worked for me on my desktop and on laptops where you require adapter for sure..
foung software would not load correctly twice until reciever was attached to puter via usb-serial,powered on,slip in usb-serial disc ,and then it loads correctly
this has been done on 1-4000 and 2-5000,s with no issues.
hope this directs you in the right direction along with a lot of other support and stickys above every support for any peticular model.

k, here's a couple things that might help,
first have you tried to load it in "stand-by" mode instead of "boot" mode?,
if not give it a try, put the stb in stand-by then try loading the bin,
if that does'nt work here is a link that MAY give you an answer,

Explain to me what USB-Seial cable you have? Some of the cheaper brands won't work with FTA.
Here are some example USB to Serial cables that are known to work well with FTA receivers.
