For all those who like there 7000, you will love this, definetly a nice step in the right direction, A new look to the receiver being all black with matchin black remote.
All the details and features of the 7000, but obviously improvements, and the main feature, the USB loading feature, which works flawlessly and no needing to rename files. simply download, un stuff, load to usb stick, insert, OK the file and away ya go. Simply use the auto setup still on the model, and it scans away and finds your setup, dish's, switch's and scans away the channels for ya, within minutes you can be watchin tv from when ya hook it up.
The other main thing to notice is the power switch now on the back of the receiver that was missing on the 7000, a definite need and plus to have now.
Still the same great quality audio and video, especially using the rca's instead of the coax, just beautiful, and appears with just the first file out, improved on the quality sig for D*** without a doubt. Havent seen one single freeze or lock up yet, been shutting it off nightly but none of the freezing or loosing sig noticed by some on the 7000.
Still love the idea of going to a channel and when the info bar pops up, get to see the next show as well, a little thing , but cool
Epg seems to be workin great and loads quite fast and have had great success up to 5 days (all played with so far) and the extended epg will download almost every show info available.
A REALLY NICE feature with the epg, as we know, the transponders sending the epg info changes at times, and the 7100 will now let you go into the extended epg, and let you edit the tp you want to use and set to download your epg for you, rather than just depending on the file made to decide and become outdated sometimes. I think that is really cool.
This along with all the basic options everyone knows and loves, makes the 7100 a definite must in my books, especially at the price, An excellent deal in my books and any of my buds who have recently bought one and had basically the same feelings.
A few notes that could be improved on, is when the usb loads, it pops up and says "process", but is not an active pop up, its just a dead box, so you dont know if anything is actually happening or if the receiver is frozen, it ends up that its not frozen but the progress pop up could be animated to show that it is doing something and not frozen. Another thing would be for any newbies out there, if there was some indication of when the keys are rolling to let them know.
With only the first file being out when tested and reviewed, I would definetly say a great job done by Captain on this one, and definetly look forward to any further improvements they make. A definite step up from the 7000 and without any of the previous issues some had (at this point) would definetly recommend it to anyone who asked or had reservations because of issues they had or read about with the 7000, For the price of these right now, ya cant go wrong for the quality and features of what the 7100 has to offer

For anyone interested, thought I would share this
too, after a week or so of this original setup and
post, thought some may be interested in the progress
of the testing of this receiver.

All this time later, and the 7100 is still rockin along like
a true champ. No issues at all with freezing, loosing
sig or pic, NONE WHAT SO EVER. I'd say that Captain
has a real winner on their hands with this one. And Not
for a second receiver, I mean for your main receiver. All
past issues appear to have been addressed, cant wait
for any new bins with minor improvements or upgrades:coolup:

Just fired up one of these yesterday for the first time. Initial impressions are that it ROCKS! Compared to other boxes and the problems they are currently having the 7100 is plugging right along.

Auto-setup was almost 100%, I did have to configure 110 manually but think that might have been something I did myself here. Menus are simple and straight forward and everything is where you would expect to find it.

Pic quality is excellent, I have seen some slight freezing and the channels everybody is experiencing problems with are unavailable as well. USB loading went smooth, channel scanning is fast, and previous problems with the 7000 model all seem to have been rectified.

Just getting into FTA and want an idiot-proof box at a great price then you can not go wrong. Just half the price of many other boxes and great support $120 is a small price to pay

Thanks for the reviews you guys (Siskel & Ebert) :D
This Captain company is a force to be reckoned with. They are showing that they can play ball in the major league.
Great going Captain. Keep up the great work

I, like the previous posters, have had the pleasure of testing this newest addition to the Captain family. Like it's older brothers and sisters, the 7100USB is a breeze to set up and watch. Improvements over the 7000 are there, but the overall look and "feel" of this STB is genuine. Smaller than previous models, nicer, larger digital display in green, making it somewhat easier to read from a distance. A nice feature too is the ability to choose your own skins for the layout on the screen (blue, purple, brown, olive, etc) so YOU can make it pleasing to YOUR liking.

Like everything else with the Captain line, it's almost idiot proof. It is all taken care of with the push of the "one button setup". From box to watching TV in mere minutes. Picture quality is the best in the price range. And speaking of price, Captain has priced these babies RIGHT and will definitely make a dent in the market at just $120, half of what you might expect to pay.

I haven't encountered any video freezing that has been reported by others, but rest assured that Team Captain is right on top of the service end of things and should there be a need either now or in the future for upgrades or fixes, then Team Captain has proven until this point that they will be there for the consumer in the future. Like everything else in life, it could be the greatest STB on the market, but without followup service, it just ain't worth it. The Captain line has come through every time so far and no reason to believe that will change in the future.

If you're just starting into this hobby, then the Captain 7100USB should be your first choice for television viewing. Easy on the pocketbook and easy on the nerves as well. Pick one or two up today and begin enjoying what alot of people already are!!!!!

Cheers gin ;)
