Didnt have time to Snope this but may be worth reading for the fellow canucks at the site
You may want to pass this on to family or friends
Re: 90# on your telephone..
I dialed '0' and asked the operator to confirm if this was correct, so please pass it on.
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as a Telus Serviceman, who was conducting a test on the telephone-lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine (9) and then zero (0), followed by the pound sign (#), and then to hang up.
Luckily, I was suspicious, and I refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you are giving the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home =2 0 phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of B.C.Alta.Ont.NB. local jails and prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE !
The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.
After checking with Telus, they said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone!

It always drives me crazy that people have more time to start a thread and post stuff, but no time whatsoever to see if their post is valid or a hoax. Come on people, it takes 10 seconds to check snopes. The #90 deal has been circulating the internet for well over 10 years...

And it said that it was partially true.

I agree with you Zen.....it takes 2 seconds to look at snopes and it will tell you.
Now this scam is partially valid for business customers and not residential or cell phone users...

Now that is an old 'phreaking' trick back in the 90's with the phone switchboard systems that offices use.. not from people at home..
most phone companies that make the switchboards have already fixed issues like that... man.. those were the days... last time I heard this story I steped in dinosaur shit.. I guess slapping the word 'Telus' makes the storyline more updated? hahahaha

Yes... Its an oldie, but a goodie wich is still partially true.
It does not have to be 90# ......
You can receive calls like... "You have just been selcted to win a prize!!! To claim your prize... Press 1 on you phone now !"
Thats when I hang up... well usually I hang up on the dead space of no one talking for a few seconds at the beginning... LMAO
Don't push any keys for anyone, regardless who it is. By you pushing anything, you are granting some type of permission to do something.
In these though times.... more and more scammers are surfacing, it's a jungle out there, be carefull !!
;)
