In case anyone is trying this, here is a record of what it takes, or in my case, what it took to flash the Pansat 2700A from a USB port on my laptop:

Objective:
Put the latest bin into a Pansat 2700A using the USB port on my laptop.

Background Infromation:
The Pansat 2700A requires a Null Modem Cable, straight through won't work. The Pansat 2700A has a male RS232 port.

Steps:
1. Buy a USB to RS232 converter cable. This cable has USB on one end, and male RS232 on the other end. The one I got from *shack was a straight through type.

2. Plug the USB plug into your computer.

3. Buy a "Null Modem Adapter." Plug the female side of this adapter to the male end of the RS232 cable.

4. Buy a "Gender Changer Adapter" that is female on both ends. Plug one end of this adapter into the male "Null Modem Adapter" and the other side into your receiver.

You now have a valid connection from your usb port to the Pansat 2700A (or any other receiver using the null modem RS232).

5. Load the drivers that came with your USB to RS232 converter cable. Once loaded, plug the usb end of the plug into your laptop, and your computer will recognizethe cable.

6. Here are settings on the converter cable that will make the connection work, I got some of these from the RS232C spec, and in the case of the FIFO buffers, from trial and error:

Get to the Windows Device Manager (right click on "Computer" in Vista, go into its "Properties" and you will see the "Device Manager").

Click on the "Port Settings" Tab and use the following which comply with the RS232C spec:
Bits Per Second - 115200
Data Bits - 8
Parity - Odd
Stop Bits - 1
Flow Control - None

Now click on the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the Port Settings tab. Click the check-box to turn on "FIFO Buffers" and move the slider bar for transfer and receive to the left (i.e. to a setting of 1).

Note the COM Port that is set on this tab. In my case COM Port was set to 4, make sure you use this same port from your Loader program (GTROM in my case).

Now you are ready to use your USB port to communicate with a null modem port on your receiver.

If you have a Pansat 2700 A like me, you should read the posts by Centauri in the support Forum on how to flash the Pansat 2700 A (don't skip any steps, or it won't work).

Enjoy !
