First OFF. Make sure to install the Driver CD that came with your USB-Serial cable

Some may need to set up there USB-Serial cables Com port to a more loader friendly number.

Or...

If you just want to know what com port it is set at, this is how its done:

To change the COM port number assigned to a USB to RS-232 Serial Adapter follow the steps below:

1. Open the Windows Device Manager.
2. Right click on the COM port you want to change.
3. Left click on Properties.
4. Click on the Port Settings tab.
5. Click on the Advanced... button.
6. Use the drop down list to select the COM port number you want to use.
7. Click OK.
8. Click on OK again and close Device Manager.

Here is a picture of what this looks like:

That above was a copy/paste. This post is my own now:

Plug your USB-Serial into a USB slot. Don't plug the other end to the receiver.
Now try this:

1) Go to Control Panel
2) Double click on System
3) Click on the [HARDWARE] tab then [DEVISE MANAGER]
4) Hit the [+] sign on {Ports(Com&LPT)}
5) Double click on your USB-Serial comm if its there
6) Hit the [PORT SETTINGS] Tab and click on [ADVANCED]
7) Change your com port setting and hit [OK]

i have had no trouble with the coolsat4000 or 5000.once all hardware installed, which i found went easily with unit connect to usb port via sreial it was recognized quicker by software being slipped in after all connection made.

if i use a different usb port I click on outdetect on loader,it finds where i am connected, then browse and load file...

this has worked for me on my desktop and on laptops where you require adapter for sure..

foung software would not load correctly twice until reciever was attached to puter via usb-serial,powered on,slip in usb-serial disc ,and then it loads correctly

this has been done on 1-4000 and 2-5000,s with no issues.

hope this directs you in the right direction along with a lot of other support and stickys above every support for any peticular model..

great site to whomever and all, very user friendly and enjoyable

thanx to all members, admins, mods, chat ops and visitors..

keep up the great work and polite posts to newbees and all..

feel welcomed very much and that helps so much..

good on all of yous:D

Also note that if you decide to change to a different USB port on your computer, a new Com Port Number will be designated. But you can just repeat the steps above to rectify that.

Here are some example USB to Serial cables that are known to work well with FTA receivers.

I recently had to fix someones troubled USB to Serial setup. This may help others in the future:

You have done all that was posted above but yet it still won't work!!!

Go back into Control Panel and set your USB to Serial Adapter to a different COM Port. (See the How to do that above). Make sure you change the Com Port settings on LOADER program as well to match it up.

And don't forget to Plug both your USB-Serial and other cable together:
ie:

[COMPUTER] --- [USB-Serial] --- [straight through OR Null Modem] --- [Receiver]

I find that when i plug into a usb port my computer picks a com port that is not busy and have to go into control panel, systems, hardware, device manager and click on ports to see which com port it has selected. It isn't the same one all the time even though i plug it into the same usb port. You can go one step further and click on your serial to usb device and select port settings and change your port.

Thanks Centuri, and all, for your informative replies. I found the cd and installed the driver. I checked the port (7) and specified that port in the loader2. When the zmodem comes up and begins sending I turn the switch on back of extreme on and the zmodem cycles between "resending" and a frame address of some sort. I've tried everything I could think of, tried reinstalling the driver with the extreme on and attached to computer. Downloaded another drive and installed that. All I get is the same cycle, as stated above. I purchased what I thought was a null modem cable which has a 9 pin male serial at one end and the usb at the other. The package also included a 9 pin female serial to parallel male but I'm not using that of course.

When I hit cancel on the zmodem it comes up with an error on the OK dialog. I know it's probably "try this or try that" scenario at this point. Any input appreciated.

Scott

You can't think you have the correct cable. If the USB-Serial cable is NOT hooked up to the correct Null Modem cable it will NOT work. These receivers are very specific to the cable liking
