Wal-Mart counting on price cuts (Canada Corp.)

Competition in the *Canadian retail landscape is heating up in the crucial holiday shopping season.*
*Discount heavyweight Wal-Mart Canada Corp.*...

Competition in the Canadian retail landscape is heating up in the crucial holiday shopping season.
Discount heavyweight Wal-Mart Canada Corp. said on Thursday that it is dropping a record number of prices in the coming weeks to spur cost-conscious consumers into its stores.
The retailer expects to lower more than 18,000 prices this month alone, representing what it says is 20 per cent more price rollbacks than in November of last year.
“We know this has been a tough year for Canadians, so we have made every effort to drop our prices and help Canadians make their dollars go farther this holiday season,” David Cheesewright, chief executive officer at Wal-Mart, said in a statement.
Retailers across North America are bracing for fierce competition this holiday season to respond to budget-conscious consumers who remain bruised from the harsh economic downturn.
On Tuesday, Loblaw signalled that it is lowering prices and ready to go even further in the weeks leading up to Christmas, even if profit margins are pinched. “I think this Christmas will be pretty fierce in terms of competition,” Loblaw president Allan Leighton told analysts.
And on Wednesday, Dene Rogers, chief executive of Sears Canada Inc., said economic uncertainty continues to rein in consumer spending. “Sears will be aggressively marketing in the fourth quarter to convey to customers that we have the holiday season's most wanted products at prices that can't be beat,” Mr. Rogers said.
Now Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is gearing up for battle. Its latest round of cutbacks follows its price reductions in late September – dropping the price of some popular toys to $10 weekly. The price cuts of up to 67 per cent included such products as Transformers Universe (regular $29.92) and Mega Bloks' Builder Racer (regular $24.96) .
The retailer's research at the time showed that Canadians were concerned about the economy, but didn't want to compromise when it came to gift giving or entertaining over the holiday season. It found that 81 per cent of Canadians said that they planned to spend the same amount on gifts for their children as last year, while 54 per cent of them said they were more worried about the economy this year than last. It found that 74 per cent of Canadians planned to buy items on sale to help stay on budget.
It said on Thursday that prices between now and Christmas will continue to drop in every department, ranging from electronics to food.
Still, Eric La Fleche, chief executive officer of grocer Metro Inc., said on Wednesday that he doesn't foresee the return of “irrational” pricing this holiday season. “We don't see an ugly, war-type environment,” he told an analysts' conference call. “Competition has heated up a bit … but we don't see going into Christmas any irrational behaviour. It will be competitive as it always is.”

Well FTA****le Supporters.. how are you? It's been awhile since we had a meeting in this room. Today I bring you here for some interesting news.

I have received word that Plastic is running wide open with an old Hcard wedge used as a blocker.. (or something like that) I didnt test H cards so forgive me if that doesnt make sense.. Im thinking thats how sv managed to get all those channels open.. it's not a sub because subs dont let you subscribe to locals outside your area..also.. there is a rom 206 dump floating around AND a script... do a google search for 206_hi-rev.rar..

The future is looking "interesting" to say the least folks..

stay tuned..
A Win for Bulk TV.. Global Satellite & More

Bulk TV’s Fast Growth: Bulk TV & Internet, a provider of DIRECTV services for commercial properties, has snared spot #27 is the Triangle Business Journal’s awards for the fastest growing private companies in the Raleigh, N.C. Research Triangle region. Currently Bulk TV provides free-to-guest television programming service to more than 80,000 hospitality, healthcare, student housing and MDU rooms across the U.S.

Global Sat Launch: Global Satellite USA has launched the first digital voice and data solution customized for commercial boats or offshore applications. The digital system combines a satellite phone, a BGAN or Fleetbroadband system, SatCollect, internet, wireless and GSM in one solution.

Scorched Earth in Canada: Watch for a big, BIG fight in Canada as the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission conducts hearings over whether cable and sat providers should pay retranmission fees for carrying broadcasters’ signals. Stung by slumping ad markets, the broadcasters are hoping for 50-cent fee per signal; cable and sat ops are fighting back hard saying the fees would result in $5 to $10/month rate hikes for consumers. It’s all in government hearings now with more fireworks sure to come.

Imam TV? Iran says it plans to boost the number of satellite channels available to viewers. No word on whether All-Imam-All-The-Time will be mandatory.

A(nother) Breakdown at Nielsen: Another problem at the ratings giant: Due to a power failure, Nielsen’s servers took a powder yesterday, meaning that weekly TV ratings have been delayed.

EchoStar's been busy

By Dan O'Shea

Satellite TV firm EchoStar Corp. has had a busy couple of weeks. The Colorado-based firm, which owns Dish Network and a sister company, EchoStar Satellite Services, that provides wholesale TV and video transport and gear to telcos to support their IPTV services, reported third quarter earnings last week before heading to TelcoTV 2009. It announced new telco customers, as well as a partnership with Latens. The company also reportedly dropped hints that it is developing a TV app store for Dish Network.
EchoStar just announced that long-time leader Charlie Ergen, whose name ranks in the same company as media industry titans like John Malone, Brian Roberts and Rupert Murdoch, has handed off president and CEO responsibilities to veteran EchoStar executive Michael Dugan. Ergen will remain chairman of both Dish Network and the sister firm, EchoStar.
Ergen also will remain CEO of Dish, the satellite TV provider which around this time last year was perceived to have taken a major blow when AT&T chose DirecTV over Dish as its exclusive satellite TV resale partner. That decision left Dish out of the resale action of the nation's three largest telcos, though Dish continued to hold resale deals with several smaller telcos.
Last week, EchoStar's Dish showed more signs that it is leaving those perceptions behind, posting customer additions of 241,000, plus a profit for the third quarter. Those new customer additions were much higher than those posted by DirecTV for the same quarter (136,000).
Meanwhile, at TelcoTV 2009, EchoStar announced that its ViP-TV wholesale platform had been chosen by three more rural telcos: North Penn Telephone Company of Prattsburgh, N.Y.; CT Communications Network of Urbana, Ohio; and TCT West of Basin, Wyo.
"We move their headend costs into our platform, and make it an operational expense for them, rather than a capital expense," said Vern Smith, senior vice president of satellite services for EchoStar. "This gives them a lot more flexibility, and we think it makes IPTV a slam dunk for these guys. Otherwise, they spend all this money to buy stuff and then have nightmares about what works and what doesn't work."
Smith added that EchoStar has seen greater success for its ViP offering since creating an equipment exchange program for telcos that had been customers of the similar SES Americom satellite-based wholesale offering called IP-Prime. SES Americom announced its exit from the market last fall, which re-stocked the market pond with more small carrier customers for competitors like EchoStar who could provide jilted IP-Prime customers with a smooth exit path.
"What happened with IP-Prime was actually a good thing for the industry because it made companies look at their options, and if anything, it scared them and convinced them that they needed to get going on figuring out how to provide TV services and who they should partner with to do that," Smith said.
As for the partnership with Latens, a middleware and conditional access system vendor, the move was led by EchoStar's European unit, and the benefits in increased market reach are mutual.
Jeff Hale, national accounts manager for EchoStar, said the partnership helps EchoStar adapt its set-top box offerings to the different challenges of a European IPTV market that is far more mature than the U.S. market. EchoStar Europe has been targeting IPTV providers in Europe for only a short time, since announcing an initial product foray last spring at the IPTV World Forum event.
Hale said that EchoStar's HDX-600 STB, a hybrid DVR unit, is being integrated with Latens' card-less conditional access system and ECO middleware to support authorization-based TV and video-on-demand services. "Eventually, we hope to bring this box to the U.S. as a home receiver," he said. EchoStar and Latens showed off the integrated approach at TelcoTV 2009.
Latens, for its part, gains an important U.S. partner in EchoStar, said Phil Cardy, director of product marketing at Latens, which is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and already has a U.S. office in Atlanta. "EchoStar has been very keen about getting into Europe, and we can leverage them as we get more into North American markets," Cardy said. He added that the integration with the HDX-600 addresses the market evolution of telco and cable TV companies chasing the same goal-hybrid content strategies. The hybridization trend heightens the need for effective conditional access.
The concept of the app store for EchoStar's Dish TV business, first reported by Light Reading's Cable Digital News last week, is intriguing. Telcos and other service providers have debated the benefits of setting up application storefronts to support multiple services since Apple's iTunes and iPhone app store efforts met with such huge success. To some degree, major wireless carriers have already pursued the concept, but the burgeoning TV app environment would seem to offer another opportunity to build on that concept. If EchoStar moves ahead on the idea, it would offer an early testing ground for whether or not the idea is viable in the U.S. TV services market

With media titans GE and Vivendi still negotiating a deal to bring cable operator Comcast into a mega-media joint venture, a management move at DirecTV is giving dealwatchers a fresh programming alternative.
Yinka Adegoke and Sinead Carew report the appointment of PepsiCo veteran Michael White (pictured below), who has no experience in pay TV, as DirecTV CEO is being read as a sign the company’s parent, Liberty Media, just wants a baby-sitter until its sells the operation in the next couple of years.
Telecom leaders Verizon and AT&T approached Liberty earlier this year, they report. Both have cross-marketing deals with DirecTV and would leapfrog the rest of the market with the addition of DirecTV’s subscriber base. But fears of insurmountable regulatory resistance put those talks on ice.
Liberty Media shareholders are set to vote this morning on a plan to split DirecTV from Liberty Entertainment — a move that Wall Street believes could pave the way for a telephone company to put in a bid for DirecTV, leading to a similar bid for smaller rival Dish Network.
If Comcast gets its content pipeline connected to NBC Universal, the pressure on the telcos to boost subscribers could get them to test the regulatory waters again.

Liberty Starz Should Begin Trading Friday

The long-awaited spin-off of Liberty Entertainment was approved by shareholders in a 30-minute special meeting in New York Thursday, paving the way for a consolidation of its 57% interest in DirecTV Group and the separation of its Starz Entertainment business into its own stock.
Liberty Media, the parent of Liberty Entertainment, had proposed the spin-off earlier this year. Liberty Entertainment currently houses Liberty Media's 100% interest in Starz Entertainment, its 57% interest in DirecTV, three regional sports networks, a 65% interest in cable channel GSN and FUN Technologies, WildBlue Communications and online entities PicksPal and Fanball. After the deal is completed, expected at 5 p.m. Nov, 19, Liberty Entertainment will be split into two (temporary) units, both called Liberty Entertainment: one will include the DirecTV interest; its regional sports networks, FSN Pittsburgh, FSN Rocky Mountain, and FSN Northwest; GSN (formerly Game Show Network); $80 million in cash; and $2 billion in debt. That entity will later be merged with DirecTV, at which time it will assume the DirecTV name.
The remaining assets -- Starz, WildBlue, PicksPal, Fanball, FUN Technologies and about $650 million in cash -- will be renamed Liberty Starz.
Liberty Starz has been trading on a when-issued basis for the past few weeks, and prices have ranged from $47 to $49 per share. The stock is expected to begin regular trading on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbols "LSTZA" and "LSTZB" on Nov.

Senate Commerce Passes Satellite TV Bill

November 19, 2009

WASHINGTON:

The Senate Commerce Committee today passed its version of legislation that directs the carriage of local TV stations on satellite systems. What is now known as STELA, for the “Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act,” passed the committee in a voice vote on a package of bills that included bones for low-power FM radio stations, sharks, the Chesapeake Bay and public transportation.

STELA extends for five years the right for satellite TV providers to carry out-of-market TV signals to household that can’t receive stations in their own markets. Current law, known as SHVERA, expires at the end of this year. This new legislation also replaces language referring to analog signals with references to digital transmissions, and directs the FCC to develop a correlative reception test. It also directs the commission to determine whether the licensing scheme it extends should be scuttled in favor of negotiations between stations and DBS providers.

Several legislators have pushed DBS operators to carry local stations in all 210 TV markets. DirecTV does so in 152 markets; Dish Network, in 182--both as of Oct. 8. They say the remaining markets are too cost-prohibitive to serve. The Commerce version of the bill doesn’t require or provide incentives for local-into-local in all 210 markets, but Committee Chairman John D. Rockefeller (D.-WV) said the issue would be a priority when the legislation is merged with versions from the Senate Judiciary Committee.

That mash-up must then be voted on by the full Senate and reconciled with a similarly mashed-up version in the House that has yet to reach the floor.

OTTAWA — It takes money to make money — especially in a recession, according to the Canadian Business’s 2009 list of the richest Canadians, which shows that the rich kept getting richer despite the economic downturn that has cost 400,000 Canadians their jobs in the past year.
The five wealthiest Canadians in 2008 topped the list again in 2009.
The Thomson family of Toronto, of Thomson Reuters and Woodbridge Co. Ltd., retained a solid hold on the title of richest Canadians with a combined wealth of $21.99-billion.
However, there was some jockeying for other positions: Toronto’s Rogers family, of Rogers Communications, slipped a spot to No. 5, with a combined wealth of $4.7-billion, while Vancouver’s Jimmy Pattison, worth $5.07-billion, jumped from No. 5 to No. 4.
Galen Weston, of George Weston Ltd. and Loblaw Cos. Ltd., remained Canada’s third-richest person at $6.47-billion. James and John Irving, of New Brunswick’s Irving Oil Ltd., at $7.28-billion, stayed in second place.
The Thomsons actually managed to grow their wealth by 19% despite the recession, which was particularly harmful to media interests. But in terms of rate of wealth increase, the Thomsons have nothing on Ivanhoe mining executive Robert Friedland, whose bank account grew by 217% to $1.59-billion, according to the magazine, and who jumped from 61st spot on the top 100 to 32nd in the past year.
Goldcorp founder Rob McEwan returned to the list after dropping off last year, as his money pool grew 134% deeper, to $568-million, landing him in 89th spot.
Canadian Business, a magazine founded in 1928, says it goes through proxy statements, insider trading reports and other sources to estimate the worth of rich Canadians.
There are two more billionaires in Canada than there were last year — 55, up from 53 — and the total net worth of Canada’s richest grew to $172.7-billion in 2009 from $165.1-billion in 2008, the second-highest total in the 11 years that the magazine has been compiling its list. The highest was $176.9-billion in 2007.
It wasn’t all sunshine, of course: Lee Ka Lau, of ATI Technologies — at $472 million — is richer this year than he was last, but last year’s 99th place finisher didn’t earn enough to stay on the list. Likewise, Bill Comrie of the Brick Group’s Income Fund fell off the list after the treasure in his chest dropped to $415-million.
Ontario is the province of choice of moneyed Canadians —3 9 of the 100 richest live there, compared with 18 in Quebec, 12 in B.C., 11 in Alberta, four in Nova Scotia, and two each in Manitoba and New Brunswick. Twelve live outside the country.
Top 5 richest Canadians in 2009:

1. Thomson family $21.99-billion
2. James Arthur and John Irving $7.28-billion

US postal service closes North Pole to Christmas post

US Postal Service has been accused of Scrooge-like behaviour after it imposed strict rules on a 55-year-old Father Christmas letters service over fears that paedophiles might gain access to the young correspondents.

Since 1954, the Operation Santa programme, which is centred in the small Alaskan town of North Pole, has been forwarding about 150,000 letters a year addressed to “Santa Claus, North Pole”.
Replies written by volunteers around the US and bearing the North Pole postmark, come signed by one of Santa’s elves. However, concerns were raised last year when a worker at a sorting centre in Maryland recognised an Operation Santa volunteer in the state as a registered sex offender.
The individual was sacked before he could answer a child’s letter, but the episode prompted the Postal Service to tighten up the rules, which already required “elves” to show identification.
The service now prohibits volunteers from having access to children’s full names and addresses. They will be replaced by codes that match computerised addresses known only to the post office.
Operation Santa will still operate but letters to Santa at the North Pole will no longer be forwarded to the Alaskan town. People in North Pole, where lampposts look like candy canes and streets have names such as Kriss Kringle Drive, are furious.
Doug Isaacson, the town’s mayor, compared postal chiefs to the Grinch, the Dr Seuss character who tried to “steal” Christmas. “It’s Grinch-like that the Postal Service never informed the elves before the fact,” he said. “They’ve been working on this for how long?”
A spokesman for the service in Anchorage said: “It’s always been a good programme, but we’re in different times and concerned for the privacy of the information.”

Craig Simpson and Jamie Salé, the newly minted winners of Battle of the Blades , the public broadcaster's hit reality competition, glide into the open space. Heads turn. A small crowd gathers. Several people approach to offer congratulations. Both turn to smile and acknowledge the well-wishers.
“It's bigger than my Olympic win,” the figure skater, Ms. Salé, says half-joking. She and her husband and skating partner, David Pelletier, won Olympic Gold in pairs figure skating in 2002. “It feels like it anyway.”
They are often stopped on the street, the retired hockey player, Mr. Simpson, adds. “It's huge,” says the two-time Stanley Cup winner, shaking his perfect crew cut. He hasn't played professional or recreational hockey for 15 years, since back injuries forced him to retire at the age of 28. In recent years, his closest proximity to centre ice has been as a Hockey Night in Canada commentator.
The pair talk about their ice-dancing win on Monday night with breathless camaraderie, contributing to the aw-shucks buzz in the air.
Here at centre ice of the CBC, there is a palpable thaw. This time, the public broadcaster won the face-off with its many critics, who have been having a field day with The National 's revamped standing-room-only news format.
It's a wonder employees aren't leaning over those open atrium balconies and shouting, “Woo-hoo! We have a hit!” Battle of the Blades defied its critics with high ratings, after all: averaging 1.7 million viewers a week. If American culture found its perfect reflection in their hit reality series, The Biggest Los er , well, ha, Canada has its own! The northern nation knows ice the way Americans know spare tires.
Swap the boring blue blazer of venerable hockey commentator Ron MacLean for a velvet-looking smoking jacket, and voilà ! a new kind of class comes to the rink. Hire hockey legends Lanny McDonald and Doug Gilmour as some of the judges, and let them become puddles of gushing sentimentality and congratulations.
Wring not your hands about hockey brutes, the series seemed to say to us. They are gentle giants if you give them a silky shirt with subtle sequins and a girl to twirl like a hockey stick. Who knew that their meaty, gloveless paws could hold a delicate hand, a slender waist, so gracefully?
And the winning pair fit perfectly into the broadcaster's idea of what airwave-Canada should be: wholesome, family-friendly, polite, open as the Prairie sky, which happens to be where both winners are from.
“Hockey player doesn't define anything about me,” says Mr. Simpson, 42, whose smile is so perfect and white he could sell toothpaste. The un-macho aspect of ice dancing never fazed him. “Who you are as a man is defined by how you treat people. I'm a man. I'm a husband. I'm a father.” The father of three beams through his chewing gum.
“We really had to bring another side out of the guys,” says Ms. Salé, whose husband worked as a coach on the Blades series. “I know Craig,” she says, looking over at him. The two were acquaintances for many years through their families, because both are members of the same Edmonton sports club. “He knows who he is, and we just brought that to the ice. That was his strength. He's funny. He's charismatic. He's tender.”
“The biggest challenge going in was to explore that part of myself publicly,” Mr. Simpson admits.
“He had no choice with me,” Ms. Salé cracks. A petite 32-year-old mother of one, she epitomizes our picture of the figure-skater persona: the perky girl next door who likes to feel the wind in her hair.
“That first week we did our routine, I never looked at anyone in the crowd,” Mr. Simpson offers as the two fall into an easy conversation with each other. “I could have been skating as I do when I am a hockey player. You may look at a good-looking girl in the stands or your wife, but mostly you don't. But don't say that …” he says, placing his paw over the tape recorder, seemingly concerned that he might appear unwholesome.
“No, no, I like that,” Ms. Sale says, laughing.
“You're just doing your job as a hockey player,” Mr. Simpson continues with a shrug. “[But] I watched Jamie, and she waved to everyone, and the next week, I thought, ‘If I'm gonna do this, I got to engage the audience.' That was a step off the ledge for me. You got to start being a showman. That was empowering me.”
Ms. Salé was fearless in letting him lift and spin her. “We wanted to make him comfortable being a figure skater,” she says of the training she and her husband gave Mr. Simpson. “Where he needs to be on the circle skating with me, how he needs to grip my hand. It's a science.”
They had only four weeks of training in Edmonton before coming to do the show in Toronto, where every week, if not eliminated, the teams had three days to perfect their next routine.
“Three days, that's unbelievable!” Ms. Salé exlaims. “I was nervous. But he was a sponge!” she says, pointing a nail-polished finger at Mr. Simpson. “He said, ‘Show me more!' We had to hold him back. Because we never wanted to put him at risk.”
“It was better being a neophyte,” says Mr. Simpson, who suffered from back pain and other injuries during the series. “My mind was an open book.”
But responsibility was always paramount, he quickly points out. “I watched Dave, and I would go to him and say, ‘Tell me the danger spot there and if I feel that, how do I get out of it?' She fell once on me,” he says, looking over at his skating partner. “I almost separated my shoulder.”
“But he saved me,” says Ms. Salé, smiling sweetly like a damsel in faux distress.
“I saved her,” he repeats proudly.
The two beam at each other again. “It's teamwork,” Mr. Simpson gushes. Each wasn't sure of the idea when first approached about it. “But you don't get into something and do it halfway,” he asserts.
“And there's nothing cheesy about the show,” Ms. Salé puts in.
“We were a family,” he adds, all doe-eyed.

thanks to queenh8 for this post

Due to the rise of malicious users coming here with sole intention of stealing stuff mainly premium filehosting accounts,
I have created this simple guide in order to not only identify a phishing page but also what to look out for when viewing topics here at projectw.

what is phishing?
By definition

Quote:
Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to steal personal information, The best way to protect yourself from phishing is to learn how to recognize a phish.
Phishing attempts usually appear to come from a well-known organization and ask for your personal information, such as credit card number, social security number, account number or password
In order for Internet criminals to successfully "phish" your personal information, they must get you to go to a website and enter in your information. Phishing will almost always tell you to click a link that takes you to a site where your personal information is requested

How to spot a genuine website?
Most phishing attempts here use a 3rd party website i will be using rapidshare.com for my examples.

This is a screenshot of a genuine rapidshare.com download page.

Code:

http://img37.picoodle.com/img/img37/3/1/22/f_SS200901222m_a1ff196.jpg

First thing to look for when trying to spot a phishing page is that most phishing URL's are masked by link protecting sites and URL shortening sites.
For example the address http://phishingexample.notlong.com will lead you to projectw's index page, This is mainly used to hide the actual site the phishing page is hosted on.

A genuine rapidshare page like in the above screenshot you should notice in the address bar, It should have http(s)://rapidshare.com/files/3134234/somefile.rar which should be the same as the download link you have clicked.

How to spot a phishing attempt?
This screenshot is from a fake rapidshare.com page.

Code:

http://pwimage.org/images/548q3dv18bbrkaez55e.jpg

To properly identify a fake rapidshare site, Again first look at the address bar, If it doesn't have http(s)://rapidshare.com/files/3134234/somefile.rar but infact has something like http://phishingexample.notlong.com which infact leads to a rapidshare page this is probably a phishing page and should be avoided.

There are 3 easy ways to spot a phishing site.

First being looking at the address bar as mentioned above
Second being looking at the source of the page this can be done by right clicking the page then searching for "href=" and should see a link like http://www.phishingsite.com/index.php?rs=http://rs576tl.rapidshare.com/files/184066674/dl/saints2.part01.rar, If you see such a link please do not download this file.
And last being if you enable direct downloads via your rapidshare premium account settings this setting will bypass the need to access the above pages and automatically download the file.

How to avoid phishing attempts?
As stated above one of the ways to avoid phishing pages altogether is to enable the direct download feature as if you get asked for your username and password with this setting enabled the link you have just tried to download is most likely a phishing attempt.
Other ways to download without risk of phisher is too use a download manager such as rapget, jdownloader, IDM, flashget and so on, these applications require the dorect download feature to be enables in order to let you download from rapidshare using them.
Also rapidshare have intoduced a new feature called the security lock it is a very good and wise idea to enable this option as will stop people primarily changing your password and thus stealing your account

What do i do when i see a phisher?
Easiest thing to do is report the topic if you happen to come across a topic here with phishing links in it.
But preferably due to the serious matter that people are trying to steal accounts,We do urge users to PM a global mod with the link of the topic so we can ban the user who is phishing, trash the topic and censor the URL to stop further attempts.

I have been phished, Now what?
Well this is something we cannot fix unfortunately, If you so happened to have been phished only method of getting your rapidshare.com account back is sending a email to rapidshare's support more info here

Code:
http://rapidshare.com/support.html

After contacting rapidshare's support team, they should then supply you a new password for your account and you can get back to downloading stuff from here.

Last words and links
Now if you have any doubts about a topic here that you are suspicious of please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff here about it as we are here to help
If you follow all the above and watch carefully what links you download from, you should be safe from phishing attempts

Here are a few links to some popular download managers which you can use to download from rapidshare and other filehosts

Rapget

For those unfamiliar with the dark skies and bitter cold of an authentic Iqaluit winter.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will host his G7 colleagues at a two-day summit in the city of 7,000. Mr. Flaherty framed the visit, some 2,000 kilometres north of Ottawa, as a true taste of Canada.
“I don't know if you've been Iqaluit in the middle of winter – I have. And it's the most beautiful scene I've ever seen in Canada,” he said. “It's spectacularly pristine and gorgeous. And, yes, it's very cold, but we're Canadians. We're used to the cold.”
It's not just any cold. Iqaluit's daily temperature in February is the coldest of any month, with average daily lows of -32 C, without wind chill, and only a few hours of light each day. And then there's the snow – Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips called it the “blizzard capital of Canada.”
“This is the dead of winter we're talking about here,” he said. “This is not Club Med in the North.”
It's customary for international finance ministers to meet in advance of the gatherings of world leaders, such as the ones that will take place in Canada in June.

Iqaluit, however, is becoming a host city of choice among the political ranks of late. Over the summer, Prime Minister Stephen Harper held a cabinet meeting in the tiny city – there are no traffic lights – in a show of Arctic sovereignty.
“We're starting to get a lot of exposure now,” said Brian Twerdin, who runs a local coffee shop with his wife, Iqaluit Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik.
Mr. Flaherty's office couldn't say Wednesday night whether Russian officials, who often sit in on G7 gatherings and have stepped up their own Arctic activities, would attend the meetings on Feb. 5 and 6.
Mr. Flaherty said his G7 peers are excited by the idea of a Nunavut summit, a break in the monotony of their big-city political schedules.
“They not only approve, they're intrigued,” he said. “We travel around the world. And usually we're in one hotel room in one city compared to one hotel room in the other. And it doesn't really matter where you are. … But they'll remember Iqaluit.”

Powerful running games helped the Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins grind out what may have been season-saving victories last weekend, but there's not much time to recover.

They'll also have to move on without key cogs in their ground attacks.

Ronnie Brown's absence could limit the effectiveness of the Dolphins' wildcat formation Thursday night in Charlotte, while the Panthers will try to get back in the wild-card mix without star tackle Jordan Gross paving the way for their tailback tandem.

Carolina and Miami both began 0-3 after winning their respective division titles in 2008, seemingly putting themselves in major peril considering no team has made the playoffs after such a poor start since the 1998 Detroit Lions.

Instead, they've each won four of six to improve to 4-5. The Panthers' 28-19 win over Atlanta on Sunday put them one game behind the Falcons, Packers, Eagles and Giants in the wild-card picture, with a game at New York still remaining on their schedule.

"I think we were at a major crossroad in the season being 3-5," said receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who had six catches for 91 yards in his return from a knee injury. "If you look at the playoff picture, we have as good a chance as anybody else with seven games left in the season."

Muhammad's return, Steve Smith's two touchdowns and a no-huddle offense - which Smith referred to as "controlled chaos" - seem to have signaled a resurgence for Jake Delhomme, who has three touchdowns and zero interceptions in the past three weeks. Delhomme had thrown an NFL-high 13 picks in his first six games, when many were calling for him to be benched.

The Panthers have survived on their running game, which is third in the league (156.6 yards per game) behind DeAngelo Williams (5.1 yards per carry, seven touchdowns) and Jonathan Stewart (4.8, six). Williams had 92 yards Sunday and Stewart finished with 82 and two scores.

That rushing attack - and Delhomme's blind-side pass protection - might be in trouble with the loss of Gross, the All-Pro left tackle who broke his ankle against Atlanta. Gross had only missed one game in his seven-year career, but he's out for the season after undergoing surgery Sunday night.

"He's a leader, a top-10 pick," Delhomme said of the eighth selection in the 2003 draft. "He was placed at tackle at the first minicamp and he hasn't left."

Now, veteran Travelle Wharton will move from left guard to left tackle, and Mackenzy Bernadeau, an untested 2008 second rounder, will fill Wharton's spot with just two practices to prepare for Miami.

The Dolphins appeared on the verge of dropping to 3-6 on Sunday in Tampa after Chad Henne's interception with under 2 minutes to play led to a touchdown that gave the Buccaneers a 23-22 lead with 1:14 to go.

Henne didn't make a mistake when Miami got the ball back, though. He completed two passes for 41 yards and Ricky Williams' 27-yard run put the Dolphins in position for Dan Carpenter's 25-yard field goal, which gave them a 25-23 win.

Henne finished 17 for 31 for 175 yards and improved to 4-2 as a starter.

"I told him after the game in the locker room, 'You grew up today,'" defensive end Jason Taylor said. "It's a maturation process. He's going to make mistakes. We all make mistakes. I still do after 13 years. The key is to bounce back when you do, and that's what he did today."

Williams topped 100 yards for the first time this season, part of a 199-yard day for the league's fourth-best rushing attack (156.2). But Brown hurt his right foot in the victory, an injury that will keep him out Thursday - and perhaps longer.

That means the 32-year-old Williams, who's averaging a career-best 5.3 yards per carry, will be the triggerman in the wildcat formation.

"He's a good pro and knows that if Ronnie's not out there, his role is going to change," coach Tony Sparano said. "The guy carried the ball 20 times the other night. (We're) talking about a guy that led the league in rushing at one point. He gets it, he knows what he has to do."

The Dolphins figure to be in better position to stop the run, considering they feature the league's seventh-best rush defense (97.6). Carolina allows 128.1 yards per game on the ground to rank 25th.

Miami will get pass-rushing linebacker Joey Porter back this week after Sparano deactivated him for "off-field conduct" against Tampa, but it's been vulnerable through the air, allowing 239.4 yards per game and ranking 27th.

The Panthers' pass defense ranks fourth (186.4), and they've picked off eight passes in their past three games.

Carolina has never beaten the Dolphins in three meetings and hasn't faced them in Charlotte since Nov. 15, 1998.

Many of us have witnessed a thread going bad posted in the rumor forum lately that has been closed.

This brings a question do mind, "Does a rumor forum serve any purpose in a FTA forum site?" I would say yes, keeping in mind most rumors are stated based upon some real perception of an event and a possible explanation as to what is occurring or may happen in the future. A rumor section is for posting unsubstantiated reports about the future of FTA testing and other things that other members may exchange ideas and discuss in a civilized manner. Many can learn the history of FTA, a little insight into how encryption works, what is "plastic", how fixes are made, the risks of IKS, using someone else's WIFI, who is TDG, thebroken, Fred Raud etc...as a learning tool and gain a better understanding of hobby discussion. Members can also learn when respected members in a forum can debate an issue in a respectful manner with each other. If rumors were just deleted or ignored, members could possibly believe what they have read. By addressing rumors, one can remain informed that may not have access to the knowledge and insights from which valid rumors are formed from. One can digest all the information from the discussion of a rumor and make an informed decision on their own as to it's validity or not. One will see that you learn not to blindly believe everything that is posted and some responses are more informed than others. Hopefully all of us will keep proper etiquette in mind when discussing rumors and be prepared to back up what you post if you drag a rumor into the forum. A rumor forum can be a place of learning provided the original poster does post something of substance rather than garbage hauling just to make a post and members can discuss the merits of yeah or nay trying to find the truth to a matter rather than dropping down to name calling.

The Montreal Canadiens, who have struggled scoring goals this season, will have to continue to try to do so without winger Brian Gionta for the foreseeable future.

The winger has a fractured bone in his left foot and will be out indefinitely.

"The players will have to raise their game to try to make up for it," coach Jacques Martin told reporters after practice. "It opens a door for someone. We've been waiting for that since the start of the season."

Gionta, who the Canadiens' signed to a five-year, $25 million contract, was skating on the top line with other new Canadiens, Scott Gomez and Mike Cammalleri.

Despite missing the last two games with the injury, Gionta is still tied with Cammalleri for the most goals on the team with eight, and is their third leading scorer with 13 points in 19 games.

In other Canadiens' news, defenceman Ryan O'Byrne looks to be ready to the return the lineup after missing the last 19 games because of sprained knee.

The club cleared up room for him on the roster when they sent Mathieu Carle to the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Georges Laraque, who has been out of the lineup since mid-October, was also on the ice at practice on Wednesday, skating with Guillaume Latendresse and Maxim Lapierre.

Los Angeles Kings forward Ryan Smyth will be sidelined for "up to a month" due to a lower-body injury, head coach Terry Murray told the L.A. Times on Wednesday.

Smyth suffered the injury on Monday during the second period of the Kings' 4-3 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers. He left the game and did not return for the third period.

Alexander Frolov will skate on the top line with Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams in Wednesday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers, in Smyth's place.

"It's very unfortunate that you lose a player that's an important player for your team that's going to be out up to that length of time," admitted Murray to the L.A. Times. "But you know what? You take a look around the league, there's all kinds of injuries to top players and you've got to deal with it. It's part of the game. It's an opportunity for [Frolov] right now.... Take advantage of it and hope he plays very well there.

"We've seen his play in the past with Kopitar and they've had good chemistry together so hopefully they'll come together right away."

Kopitar and Williams share the same optimism about their new linemate.

"[He's] kind of a similar player to Smitty," Williams told the L.A. Times. "Works hard in the corners...We have enough depth on this team that it shouldn't be a problem scoring goals. I know Frolov and myself are looking to put more pucks in the net and hopefully maybe we can spark something right away here and get something jumping as far as goals and getting some secondary scoring.

In 22 games this season for the Kings, Smyth has nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points, while adding 10 penalty minutes.

Smyth was in the running for a roster spot on the Canadian Olympic team, but the injury likely puts an end to his chances of playing in the Winter Games in Vancouver.

Until just a few days ago, my home page with iGoogle was fine... then suddenly there has been a change.

The tabs which allow additional pages.. about 1/3 if the way down on the screen on the left hand side, have now changed to a separate column on the left... making for a lot of wasted space on my home page.

I've tried adjusting the format, but they remain firmly set as a separate column. Anyone else had this problem?

I'm attaching a screenshot so you can see what I mean.
But every once in awhile when dn is playing around channels do come available for short periods for viewing.

By the time i find out that some channels are up it's to late and they are down again, or i catch the end of the run.

So, instead of sitting with remote in hand and going through every channel to see if it is up, is there not a way to scan the sat's to get that info.

Maybe i'm reaching here, but there has to be an easier way.

Canada's largest supermarket chain third-quarter profit of $189M

\
Canada's largest supermarket chain said it faces a highly competitive Christmas selling season and will continue to cut prices to boost sales.
However, Loblaw Cos. Ltd also said it managed to boost profit in its latest quarter despite falling inflation and "pressure" on volume sales.
The news drove Loblaw's share price 3.68 per cent higher to $31.52 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
"If you look at most flyers most weeks, once upon a time you got a couple of new lows in any one month. Now we're getting two or three new lows every week. I think this Christmas will be pretty fierce in terms of competition," Loblaw deputy chairman Allan Leighton told analysts on a conference call today.
Basic net earnings for the third quarter rose 20.4 per cent to $189 million, or 69 cents a share, the company said.
Sales declined 0.2 per cent to $9.47 billion despite the positive impact of a shift in the calendar, which moved Thanksgiving into the quarter this year. The quarter ended Oct. 10.
Same-store sales, considered a key measure of retail performance, fell 0.6 per cent. Thanksgiving added 0.5 per cent to the quarter, while the acquisition of Asian supermarket chain T&T in September, added 0.2 per cent. These were partially offset by the sale late last year of Loblaw's food service business, which would have contributed 0.5 per cent to third quarter sales, the company said.
Gross profit margin rose 80 basis points to 22.9 per cent as the company benefited from improved efficiencies in buying and transportation and a better sales mix.
Internal retail food price inflation fell 3.5 percentage points, more than the Canadian Consumer Price Index for food and significantly more than in the second quarter, which hurt revenue.
But the company also said volume sales fell during the quarter, not just dollar sales. It said it planned to focus this quarter on boosting unit volume.
The company spent $25 million in the quarter on previously announced improvements to its computer systems, which lowered earnings by 6 cents a share.
Sales of food a drugs declined modestly, sales of apparel, mainly it's exclusive Joe Fresh brand, were moderate and sales of gasoline declined significantly on lower gasoline prices.
Sales of general merchandise also fell significantly, as the company continues to exit that business in all but its largest superstores.
"As we progressed through the third quarter, our sales were increasingly impacted by the significant decline in inflation and the ramp-up of our pricing investments. Earnings benefited from cost containment and supply chain efficiencies," Loblaw executive chairman Galen Weston said in a statement. "We expect that sales and margins will be challenged due to decreasing inflation, competitive intensity and our ongoing renovation and infrastructure programs."
Canada's $76 billion a year grocery industry has become increasingly competitive since the entry two years ago by general merchandise giant Wal-Mart Canada Corp. :upyours: into the fresh food business.
The company plans to invest $1 billion this year in capital improvements, both in improving its food stores and computer systems.

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. -- Chad Pennington's latest comeback is under way, even though he's not sure he'll play again.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback has completed the first phase of rehabilitation from season-ending shoulder surgery, and he'll fly Wednesday to Birmingham, Ala., to consult with Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation Oct. 2. They'll map out a program for the next six weeks, and Pennington said he may wait until March to decide whether to play in 2010.

"I can't make the decision until I get to the point where I see how I feel and how it responds," Pennington said at a Dolphins luncheon. "Then I can say I've given it everything I can give it to make the right decision for me and my family.

"I'm going full steam ahead for the next five months. My goal is by March 1 to be ready to work out for any team, including this team, and be able to make a decision where I can go into an off-season program full steam ahead not considered an injured athlete."

The operation was the third on Pennington's throwing shoulder. Twice he has returned from injuries to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year, including in 2009, when he led the Dolphins to their first playoff berth in eight years.

Pennington's replacement, second-year pro Chad Henne, has staked a strong claim to the No. 1 job by going 4-2 as a starter. Pennington's contract expires after this season, and he said he has not talked with the Dolphins about returning next year.

"Chad Pennington is an outstanding pro," coach Tony Sparano said after practice Tuesday. "There will be a time and place for us to have that discussion at some point down the road, but I think everyone knows my feelings on Chad."

Pennington, 33, said he would consider remaining in Miami as Henne's backup rather than taking a No. 1 job elsewhere.

"Part of me believes I'm here for a reason," Pennington said. "I'm a loyal guy and I believe in this organization, and I enjoy this organization and this area. The other part is that I'm a competitor, and I lead and I win games. That's what I do as a quarterback. So there's a part of me that if there's an opportunity (to start), it's going to be a very difficult decision. And I have no idea what I'm going to do. ...

"I'm speaking as if there are going to be opportunities. There may not be opportunities."

Pennington dislocated his shoulder in the third game of the season at San Diego. There was no muscle damage, and the repair wasn't as extensive as with his other operations. Pennington said he was told by Andrews he should be able to play next year if he chooses, and he hopes to start throwing in mid-January.

Pennington is around the team during the week and helps with game plans, but he watches the games at home on TV with his three young sons.

"They've got their Dolphin helmets on and they're throwing the football," he said with a chuckle. "It gets pretty rowdy and loud."

Pennington watched Sunday as Henne threw an ill-advised interception that cost Miami the lead, then regrouped to direct a 77-yard drive for the winning field goal in the final 1:10 against Tampa Bay.

"Chad does a great job of preparation, and that has allowed him to have some success and play with confidence," Pennington said. "The telltale sign is for a guy who makes a mistake at the end of the game and then able to bounce back and lead the team to victory. That says a lot. There are not a lot of young quarterbacks who can bounce back from a situation like that."

Former NHL star Theoren Fleury confirmed to the New York Post Tuesday that he has hired a lawyer and will file criminal charges against Graham James, the junior hockey coach who he alleges sexually abused him as a teenager.

“That decision has been made,” Fleury is quoted in the article. “I’ve hired Hersh Wolch, who might be the best criminal attorney in North America, and he’s going through the process of doing the necessary preparation.”

Fleury is in New York promoting his autobiography, “Playing With Fire,” which marks the first public acknowledgment from Fleury that he was a victim of abuse.
“That made me who I was,” said Fleury, who is a recovering addict following a lifetime of alcohol, drug and gambling issues. “You saw the anger on the ice. It was uncontrollable. I cringe when I see it.
“Never in my life did I want to be like that but that’s the person that the abuse turned me into; an alcoholic, doing drugs and completely out of control.”

Satellite companies false Advertising?
False Advertising?

November 17, 2009
For the past few years there has been an ongoing debate between satellite companies on who has more HD channels. Dish likes counting regional sports networks which are not true 24 hour HD channels, instead Dish only carries select games from these RSN’s in HD. DirecTV on the other hand counts the number of HD pay per view channels they offer. Using creative math both companies can call themselves the HD leaders.
If you are shopping for a satellite provider and HD is an interest to you, be sure to check the HD channel lineup to make sure the HD channels you want are carried by the satellite provider your thinking of going with.
Another thing I have seen both satellite providers advertising a lot lately is 1080p High Definition. Both Dish Network and DirecTV offer some PPV and VOD movies in 1080p. But what I saw from Dish Network the other day floored me.
In a commercial where Dish toots its horns for its great technology it mentions that they offer 1080p then show a picture of a screen showing ESPN with a graphic on the screen showing 1080p and 16 x 9 ratio.

(above is a screen shot of the ad in question)
To me this ad needs to be pulled immediately. While Dish does have 1080p content in the form of Pay Per View and VOD, ESPN is not broadcast on Dish Network in 1080p. In fact at last check ESPN only broadcasts in 720p format. The ad makes it seem like ESPN is being broadcast in 1080p when it’s not.

Don’t think that DirecTV is innocent here, a number of ads from DirecTV lately have been declaring its HD is 1080p and again only Pay Per View and VOD offers 1080p not your regular broadcast programming.

At this time don’t fall for the 1080p hype from either provider unless you love watch PPV or VOD movies, as that’s all you are going to get from them in 1080p. And honestly in a number of tests many people really can’t tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p.
Don’t be fooled by the hype, instead take a look at both providers for yourself and decide which is best for you and your family.

Intelsat’s giant I-14 craft is still standing on its launch pad. It should have launched last Saturday.

The plan was for the satellite to be orbited from Florida’s Cape Canaveral (from pad 41) on an Atlas V rocket. Now the rocket’s fuel has been drained while an important electrical component on the rocket is switched out.

The Intelsat satellite is fine. Built by Space Systems/Loral, it is the thirteenth such model to be launched.

Intelsat-14 is needed on station to replace an aging Intelsat-1R craft that has problems with its solar panels, which are losing efficiency at a faster rate than planned. It is nine years old, and would normally have been expected to last some 15 years.

There’s a possibility that the launch could be re-scheduled for today (Tuesday).

NEW YORK - "Live from New York … it’s Monday Night Raw!”

That was how Raw’s special guest host, none other than “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, officially kicked off the broadcast from a place he knows well, The World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. And boy, the WWE Hall of Famer sure wasn't kidding.

WWE Champion John Cena & World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker def. Triple H & Shawn Michaels and Unified Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho & Big Show in a Non-Title Match
Madison Square Garden has been witness to some of WWE’s most amazing Superstars throughout its storied history: Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka to name but a few. Rare, nonetheless, seems the time when such legends converge at once. That was inarguably the case, however, as WWE Champion John Cena teamed with World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker against Triple H & Shawn Michaels and Unified Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho & Big Show in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match.

Looming large in the subtext was Survivor Series, during which The Champ will face The Game and HBK in a Triple Threat Match while The Phenom must battle Jericho and Show in a three-man affair. Tonight, though, all six Superstars would compete in one colossal clash.

In the end, the two World Champions would prevail when Cena secured the victory for his team. As if to let the WWE Universe know that he needs no assistance, The Deadman suddenly turned on his partner and Tombstoned Cena, leaving the WWE Champion razed and confused.

Raw’s special guest host for next week will be Jesse Ventura
He’s taken control of the ring, the announcer’s mic and even the state of Minnesota. And next week, it’ll be time for Jesse Ventura to take over as special guest host when he drops by for a three-hour Raw Thanksgiving special.

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper challenged Mr. McMahon to a street fight; Randy Orton attacked, Kofi Kingston rushed to the rescue
Raw’s special guest host, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, has beaten cancer and cheated death on numerous occasions. One mountain he hasn’t climbed, though, is tackling Mr. McMahon in a street fight, which is why the plaid maniac challenged The Chairman to such a battle earlier in the evening.

As Piper waited in vain for Mr. McMahon to show, Randy Orton emerged, wanting a fight of his own. The Viper attacked the WWE Hall of Famer and had him on the ropes when Kofi Kingston charged into the melee. The respective Survivor Series captains of Team Kofi and Team Orton share a resentment-fueled history, which includes Kofi trashing Orton’s customized NASCAR automobile and slapping him across the face – twice! The two scuffled outside of the ring, trading blows amongst the WWE faithful. The action intensified when Kofi slammed Orton across the head, opening up a nasty gash and leaving The Viper lying hurt atop a table. The dreadlocked dynamo then climbed atop a railing and hit a Boom Drop onto Orton, severing the table into two and leaving his nemesis in gut-wrenching pain.

Jack Swagger def. Evan Bourne
Jack Swagger – rarely has a name seemed more fitting. The cocky collegiate All-American wrestler appeared to lose a bit of bluster last week when he dropped a match to high-flying Evan Bourne. In their rematch this week, Swagger wasn’t about to allow his strut to be stripped. He grounded Bourne’s aerial assault and proved that he will be a force to contend with when he joins Team Miz this Sunday at Survivor Series against Bourne and Team Morrison.

Sheamus attacked Jerry “The King” Lawler
His Irish temper has already claimed one victim, Jamie Noble, who retired last week after suffering a severe beating at the hands of The Celtic Warrior. This week, Sheamus issued an open challenge to the Raw roster, which no one accepted. Apparently, in a need to satiate his wicked ways, the Irishman attacked Raw’s timekeeper and then went after ring announcer Jerry “The King” Lawler, leaving the WWE Hall of Famer lying motionless.

Divas Champion Melina def. Alicia Fox in a Lumberjill Match
Judah Friedlander never had it so good. The 30 Rock actor and comedian was honored as special guest ring announcer for the match between Divas Champion Melina and Alicia Fox. Friedlander announced that the bout would be a Divas Championship Lumberjill Match then happily looked on from ringside.

While Fox has showcased amazing resilience in recent weeks, Melina’s gutsy performance proved too much as the Latina lovely retained the golden butterfly. Apparently, a few of the Divas disapproved and the entire ring was covered with sexy, smart and powerful women clashing with one another.

Santino Marella def. Chavo Guerrero ...Triple H Pedigreed Hornswoggle
The week prior, Chavo Guerrero wanted to fight Santino Marella, but, thanks to a misunderstanding, he ended up battling boxing great Ricky Hatton and getting knocked out by the special guest host. This week, he got his wish. Instead of trampling The Italian Stallion, however, the self-proclaimed “Mexican Warrior” fell short when Hornswoggle distracted him.

While the leprechaun, clad in DX gear, disappeared under the ring, the real DX emerged to quell rumors and settle matters once and for all. Triple H and Shawn Michaels informed the crowd that they will indeed fight one another at Survivor Series in their Triple Threat Match with WWE Champion John Cena, but that competition will not be their undoing as a team. They also called out a reluctant Hornswoggle to, as they put it, include him in DX. When the little guy showed up wearing neon green and performing DX chops, though, he suffered a damning Pedigree at the hands of Triple H in an extreme effort at thwarting the little imitator once and for all.

United States Champion The Miz def. MVP
With his smarmy tone and taunting smirk, United States Champion The Miz makes it oh-so-easy to dislike him. Which is why it’s too bad the guy just keeps winning. This week, he defended his title against MVP and emerged victorious, despite The Franchise Playa having The View’s Sherri Shepherd cheering him from ringside. The bout may prove to be a primer for when Miz leads his team this Sunday against Intercontinental Champion John Morrison, also the captain of his team, in a Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team Match.

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper opens Raw
Before greeting the WWE Universe to another edition of Raw, the WWE Hall of Famer welcomed New York actor Luis Guzman, who has had memorable roles in Boogie Nights and Traffic and can be seen in the upcoming comedy Old Dogs. Piper announced that the two would be joined by a Guzman favorite, Iron Chef Bobby Flay. Unfortunately for the Puerto Rican actor, a mix-up produced not the Iron Chef but The Iron Sheik.

After telling Piper that his favorite WWE moment from The Garden involved Hulk Hogan, Sheik flipped his head dress, rambling angrily and mimicking beating up on Hulk with a pair of action figures.

With that, the WWE Universe welcomed another wild and crazy edition of Raw to The Garden, complete with a rockin' new opening theme song compliments of Nickelback.

NEW YORK - When the phone rang, Zack Greinke let it go -- he didn't recognize the number. Only after listening to the voice mail did he call back and find out he'd won the American League Cy Young Award.

The Kansas City Royals ace easily beat out Felix Hernandez for the honour Tuesday after a spectacular season short on wins but long on domination. Winning left the extremely shy Greinke with mixed emotions.

"Back in Orlando, I haven't really got a whole lot of attention from people, which has been nice," he said. "So I hope it doesn't get that way, where everyone is like, 'Oh, hey, Zack, hi."'

He'd prefer to remain anonymous when he's not on the mound. He's not looking forward to being introduced at banquets as "Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke" for the rest of his life.

"In that way, it's kind of like a negative for me," he said.

It's been quite a turnaround for Greinke, who led the AL in losses in 2005 and quit baseball for six weeks the following year after being diagnosed with a social anxiety disorder.

Greinke went 16-8 with a major league-low 2.16 ERA this season and received 25 of 28 first-place votes and three seconds for 134 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Hernandez, 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA for the Seattle Mariners, drew two firsts, 23 seconds and one third for 80 points.

"I thought it was going to be real close between the two of us," Greinke said.

Detroit's Justin Verlander was third with the remaining first-place vote and 14 points, followed by the Yankees' CC Sabathia (13) and Toronto's Roy Halladay (11).

"Greinke deserved it. Before the season was over, I said my vote was for him," Hernandez said in Venezuela.

"This has taught me that I need to be perfect, I will prepare myself to be stronger next season. I will need a superb year because just a good one, it's not enough," he said.

The NL winner will be announced Thursday.

Despite what he's overcome, Greinke doesn't view himself as a role model.

"I really don't like having a bunch of attention, so even if I did see myself in that light, I don't do anything about it," he said. "I'm real uncomfortable doing stuff like that, to be around people and doing stuff like that," he said.

He fidgeted a bit and spoke softly during a series of telephone conference calls and a video linkup from a studio in Orlando, Fla.

Even before winning, this was sure to be a big week for Greinke. He is getting married on Saturday to high school girlfriend Emily Kuchar, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, and then is heading to Hawaii for a three-week honeymoon.

The 26-year-old right-hander was the sixth overall pick in the 2002 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 2004 and got hit hard the next year. After leaving spring training in February 2006 to combat his anxiety, he worked his way back to the majors by late September.

Greinke was 7-7 the following year and 13-10 in 2008 before his breakout season. Greinke's ERA was the lowest in the AL since Pedro Martinez's 1.74 ERA in 2000 and his 242 strikeouts were second in the league behind Verlander.

After speaking with a pair of pitchers on opposing teams -- he wouldn't identify them -- he credited an improved mental approach in which he put all his focus on each individual pitch he was throwing.

But he did think he had the best season. He said he had spoken with teammate Brian Bannister about his FIP -- a new-age statistic called Fielding Independent Pitching, which is supposed to factor out defensive differences.

He allowed just 11 home runs this year -- nine solo and two with one man on, according to STATS LLC. His victory total matched that of Arizona's Brandon Webb three years ago for the fewest by a starting pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in a non-shortened season and was the fewest by an AL starter to win in a full-length season.

Steve Carlton was the only Cy Young Award winner who pitched for a club that was worse. The Hall of Fame lefty was 27-10 with a 1.97 ERA for the 1972 Philadelphia Phillies, who went 59-97.

Kansas City, which tied for last place in the AL Central at 65-97, scored just 13 runs in his eight losses and 21 runs in his nine no-decisions. He failed to get a victory in six starts in which he allowed one run or none.

Greinke, who agreed to a US$38 million, four-year contract last winter, received a $100,000 bonus for winning.

The first-place votes for Hernandez came from Chris Assenheimer of The Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria, Ohio, and Mark Feinsand of the Daily News in New York. Verlander's first-place vote was cast by Steve Kornacki of Booth Newspapers in Michigan.

For all the recognition, Greinke could have done without it.

"A lot of stuff going on today," he said, "when I usually just like doing nothing. But just part of life."

Brendan Shanahan officially announced his retirement today, ending his 21-year career in the NHL.

The eight-time all star, who almost returned with the Devils but parted ways with the team before the start of the season, ends his career 11th on the NHL's all time goals scored list.

"I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League", Shanahan said in a news release. "I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I've had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career. While I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, I can't honestly say that I would have ever imagined that I'd be this fortunate and blessed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me fulfill this dream."

The eight-time All-Star scored at least 40 goals in six seasons, and won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings. In 2002, Shanahan then became only the third player in NHL history to win an Olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup championship in the same year.

The native of Mimico, Ontario was originally The New Jersey's first round selection, second overall, in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He amassed 656 goals, 698 assists for 1,354 points in 1,524 NHL matches with New Jersey, St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit, and New York.

By Joe Napsha, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, November 16, 200

Dish Network Corp. said today it plans to eliminate 37 more jobs at its McKeesport call center, which the satellite television programming provider said it intends to close in March, according to a notification filed with the state.
Dish Network intends to move 37 dispatching jobs in January to a call center in Pine Brook, N.J., according to a notice filed with the state. These jobs are in addition to about 600 customer service jobs Dish Network said last week will be lost when the McKeesport center closes in March.
Dish said it decided to move the jobs after an analysis determined it could relocate those jobs to the call center in northern New Jersey "based on growth considerations in the McKeesport dispatch location," the letter stated. The company did not offer the state an explanation of those "growth considerations" and a spokeswoman declined to comment further.
Workers in the dispatch jobs communicate with Dish Network installers, scheduling installation of satellite service for customers, said spokeswoman Francie Bauer. The company is offering workers in those jobs the opportunity to submit a request to transfer to other jobs in the Dish Network, but the job placement is not automatic, the company's letter said.
The McKeesport call center is scheduled to close on March 5, which will eliminate about 600 customer service jobs, Bauer said. That announcement was made on Nov. 10.
Work done by the 600 customer service representatives at the McKeesport center, which concentrated on customer service and technical issues faced by customers, will be spread across the company's remaining 12 call centers, Bauer said.

Some Dish Network call center jobs headed to New Jersey

By Moriah Balingit, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Dish Network, which announced last week plans to close a 600-person call center in McKeesport in March, has informed the state Department of Labor and Industry that 37 employees at the call center will lose their jobs Jan. 8.
The company sent a letter to the state and to McKeesport Mayor James Brewster Nov. 9 to comply with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
In a letter addressed to employees, the satellite television company said it planned to move those 37 positions to another call center location in Pine Brook, N.J. The letter said the company was analyzing the best ways to run a more efficient operation.
"Through this analysis, it has been determined that based on growth considerations in the McKeesport Dispatch location, we can relocate dispatch job responsibilities to obtain the optimum effectiveness," the letter said.
The company encouraged employees to apply for other jobs with Dish, but did not guarantee them a position within the company.
Dish has struggled in recent years to gain new subscribers as market saturation increases and it competes with cable providers like Comcast. It's also been hit hard by a lengthy court battle with TiVo, who is alleging the company's digital video recorder technology violates a TiVo patent.
The company's announcement last week that it would shutter its call center in McKeesport means the city, already saddled with a 10.3 percent employment rate, will lose one of its top five employers. The company occupies a space in the Industrial Center of McKeesport and employs more than three-quarters of the people that work there.

Businessman, 49, pleads guilty to communications piracy for illegal DISH Network decoder

-- A 49-year-old St. Croix businessman faces up to five years in prison and a $500,000 fine at his sentencing for satellite piracy.

Greg Jimenez on Thursday pleaded guilty before District Court Magistrate Judge George Cannon to the single charge of unauthorized publication or use of communications, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Jimenez admitted that May 10, 2007, he sold a free-to-air receiver to a cooperating witness, and that on June 15, 2007, he loaded a pirate software onto the receiver that was able to unlawfully intercept and decode DISH Network programming.

U.S. Attorney Ronald Sharpe praised the investigatory work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in helping to bring Jimenez to justice. Sharpe also vowed to continue to crack down on piracy in the Virgin Islands.

"Intellectual property crime is a serious offense that harms the individual as well as the economy. Beyond the immediate financial loss suffered by victims such as the DISH Network in this case, intellectual property crimes have the associated effects of increasing costs to all consumers. Indeed, law-abiding consumers bear the burden of such crimes by paying higher prices for satellite television, DVDs and CDs. Piracy of intellectual property in all forms will be prosecuted here in the Virgin Islands," Sharpe said in the release.

Satellite : DirecTV Marketer Steals DISH Customers Via 800 Number Squatting
DirecTV Marketer Steals DISH Customers Via 800 Number Squatting

By Ben Popken,

A sneaky DirecTV marketer has bought up toll-free numbers that end in "DISH." When DISH Network customers call up, the operators make it sound like they're from Dish and offering them a free service upgrade, but in reality, they're switching the service and slamming the Dish Network customer into a DirecTV service contract.
The real number for DISH is 800-333-3474, but this company has bought 888-333-3474, and according to reports on 800 notes, several other 800, 888, 866 numbers that end with "DISH."
We first heard about it in a message left on our Consumerist hotline:
TRANSCRIPT: "I had to authorize a new Dish receiver. The number on the screen said 1-800-333-DISH. I dialed 1-888-333-DISH. I got a guy that immediately asked for my name, phone number, address, email address, and talked about the new specials that he could give me for being such a loyal customer. I kind of just wanted my receiver authorized.
And he says, these are some great deals, and you should get rewarded for being such a loyal customer since you've been with Dish Network so long.
Then he says, "if I send you these new boxes out, keep in mind that these are direct Tv boxes..."
It turns out that it was a DirecTV franchise that was capitalizing on people mistaking 1-800-333-DISH for 1-888-333-DISH. They're not telling people who they are upfront and they're getting a bunch of information when you're thinking that you're talking to a company that you already trust and have an account with. So it really ticked me off. It's totally uncool. Hopefully you can print this and people won't get confused anymore." :END TRANSCRIPT
Very clever. If you accidentally sign up for this, best thing to do is a charegback. Unsurprisingly, the folks on 800 notes say the sleazy DirecTV marketers are not that nice about giving refunds.
Got a tip you want to leave by phone? Call 347-422-6695 and leave us a message.

I as reading on another forum (non-FTA) that the nFusion and Kbox receivers are getting lots of channels, as is reported here.

I have steered away from such receivers, because, I understand, they also need a "live" connection to the internet. And up to now, my internet connection has been pretty slow - 1.5Mbs. This week I'm getting a DSL line that will apparently give me 3 Mbs

Further, I've also been reluctant to use one of these boxes because of the potential for tracing, due to the internet connection.

My question for you geeks: Are the internet connected boxes safe from discovery? Can we be traced by that? What safeguards are in place that keep a determined investigator from discovering my IP and then my address?

I know this has been discussed before, but I'd appreciate hearing current views on this topic, before I rush out and buy a box.

Thanks

 Please Heed this warning!
Today I must break forum silence with an earnest, and urgent message for all in the community. I have been involved in attempts to break the Nagra3 security system recently implemented by Dish Network. This was ill-advised, and something I’m not proud of.

I want to share my experience with you, and warn any others who are considering engaging in this type of conduct with regards to Dish Network or other encryption systems. I have been arrested and now face a serious sentence of incarceration as a result of my actions. If I had only known the DMCA laws better I would have never been involved in such acts. I am sorry for the illegal acts I have committed, and strongly urge all who participate in this community to realize there are consequences for your actions, and no one in the community will come rushing to your aid. I now understand that the Federal Government takes this kind of activity very seriously, and will work in cooperation with companies such as Dish Network to fine and imprison any engaged in piracy. The Federal Government as well as companies such as Dish Network, I have learned, have full time investigators now devoted stop piracy. Let it be known, from my own experience, the people of the piracy community are not hard to find and identify!

I strongly urge all who read this post to PLEASE take heed of the serious consequences associated with encrypted signals. I encourage everyone to be law abiding, and subscribe to legal programming rather than to engage in acts of piracy. Not only are there severe penalties if caught, but the financial impact upon companies such as Dish Network impact the content
providers and content creators. Creativity is the ultimate victim of piracy.

I sincerely hope this message dissuades others from engaging in future acts of satellite piracy.
Please don’t ignore my advice.

:noclue:Hi all,

I have setup my DM500s clone for the first time (newbie), but I have no picture. I used rqcamd 1.27, then rqcamd 1.31

since 1.27 did not work for me. I am using the correct new PLI image.

I got a black screen, so no video, no audio but I got the guide, channel info, good signal etc. I did not configure any

config file also, since I am just looking for free channels.

I am not using it as a server yet, I just want to use it as a standalone to see the free channel like 100 or 101.
I am just trying to see IF I am able to view ANY of the free preview channels to ensure my setup is correct. I am using

a dual LNBF pointed at Echo 110 to test.

1.	Why do I have no video or audio, what am I missing?

2.	What should my LNB settings be using a single LNB, a standard Directv Dual LNB?

3. Do I have to configure any rqcamd or CCcam config file in order to meet my goal for just free channels?

4.	Do I still to the RQCS and config file configure also?

I think it is just a simple oversight. I read a lot of forums, but still a puzzle to me.

Please help.

Thanks.

I loaded the latest nf_hd_v1.3sR_25 and transponders-091022 bin. After scanning each sat, I can watch 110 & 119 (usually wtih doubles) and the guide will populate for the others but thats as far as it goes. I get the error service not avail. i:on/n:on/p:off/emul:off/suns disc. However, sometimes I can get the 91 & 110/119 will then display the error....? Is there something I am doing wrong for them not to work together? will happily give more info if needed. thanks

U.S. coffee company Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. has expanded into Canada by buying the wholesale business of Toronto-based Timothy’s Coffees of the World Inc. for about $165 million, entering an ultra-competitive market that features java heavyweights such as Tim Hortons and McDonald’s.
The purchase, announced early Friday, includes the Timothy’s World Coffee brand and wholesale business, but does not include the coffee company’s 139 retail outlets across Canada. Those have been sold to another buyer.
Green Mountain, known for its specialty coffees and the Keurig single-cup coffee dispenser, said the acquisition of the Toronto specialty coffee company from Sun Capital Partners Inc. will boost its presence in Canada and North America.
“Timothy’s is a great addition to [Green Mountain’s] family of brands,” Lawrence Blanford, Green Mountain’s president and CEO, said in a release.
“We have been collaborating together since they became a Keurig licensee and know the company is a great strategic and cultural fit. We believe that Timothy’s, along with our Green Mountain Coffee brand, will contribute meaningfully to our future success in Canada and throughout North America.”
The retail portion of Timothy’s is being bought by Bruegger’s Enterprises Inc., a U.S. company that operates bagel restaurants across the United States and is also part of Sun Capital Partners.
The deal will likely present Canadian consumers with more choices in the coffee market, where Tim Hortons, McDonald’s Canada, Second Cup, Timothy’s and regional players battle for market share.
Timothy’s, however, is more than a coffee retailer. It is also a supplier of specialty coffees to offices, hotels, grocery stores, retailers and food services outlets throughout Canada and the U.S. In Canada, the company does business under the Timothy’s World Coffee, Michel’s Baguette Bakery Cafe, and mmmuffins brands, as well as Levain Bakery, a specialty baker. Sun Capital said Bruegger’s acquisition of the Timothy’s retail operation not only expands that company’s footprint into Canada, but also adds new distribution channels for the company’s kettle-boiled “New York-style” bagels.
